Piedras Parado
This locality and its nearby mines is the correct source of the famous amethyst crystals that are commonly mislabelled as "Las Vigas" amethysts. Las Vigas is simply a town and neighbouring municipality that serves as a gathering and distributing point of the amethyst retrieved from the mines. Note also that Mun. Las Vigas de RamΓrez was formerly known as Mun. de Profesor Rafael RamΓrez. See comments at https://www.mindat.org/mesg-99316.html .
Geologically, the area is a large and complex skarn/ore system with pegmatites found in the intrusion, amethyst and garnets in the contact skarn zone and sulfides elsewhere in the skarn and peripheral skarn zones. The buyers and sellers of the amethyst almost never know exactly where something is from. In 2016-2018, a number of decent specimens have been recovered from pegmatites in the intrusions that caused the skarn where the garnets and amethysts are found. Plates of orthoclase and albite with smoky quartz crystals to 8 cm have emerged, some coated or studded with a variety of zeolites including orange stilbite-Na, colorless stellerite, laumontite, clinoptilolite-K, and heulandite-Ca. Locally, titanite crystals to 5 mm have been found. Jim McGlasson did the identifications by Raman on Peter Megaw specimens.
