Magmatic-hydrothermal quartz vein type gold deposit, related to a Triassic syenogranitic pluton. The orebodies are hosted in weakly metamorphosed Lower Silurian turbidites occurring along NNW-trending fracture zones. Silicification, sericitization and pyritization are closely related to gold mineralization.

The Baolun is the largest gold deposit on Hainan Island, South China, with proven reserves of over 80 t Au at an average grade of 10.3 g/t. Two economic types of gold mineralization coexist in the long-lived fault system: 1) Au-bearing sulfide quartz veins (Va), dominated by pyrite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite; and 2) Au-Bi assemblage quartz veins (Vb), dominated by bismuthinite, maldonite, and native bismuth.
More than 27 orebodies have been delineated, which are strictly controlled by thirteen NNW-trending shear zone. These thirteen sub-parallel shear zones (No. Tr1-Tr13) strike 330Β° to 355Β° and steep dip to SW at angles of 55-85Β°. Their widths vary between 7 and 135 m and lengths ranging from 400 to 2070 m. Tr1 is the largest ore-bearing structure, containing 14 orebodies with proven reserves of over 58.5 t Au, and visible gold can be easily observed in the hand specimen. Generally, these orebodies are 70 to 1240 m long and 0.2 to 4.9 m wide, with an average vertical extent of 300 m.
