Birk Fell mine, which is also referred to as Birk Fell Hause mine, is a small copper mine located just below the summit of Birk Fell, overlooking the Tilberthwaite valley. The mine worked a copper vein containing chalcopyrite, bornite, arsenopyrite and chlorite. Barite, a scarce mineral in this part of Cumbria, is also found on the dump. There is a short level close to the remains of the smithy and a small dressing floor. Above these there is another level, now collapsed. The quartz vein can clearly be seen on the surface of the exposed bedrock going up the fell to the summit, along with some openworks.
This site is now designated a SSSI by Natural England because of the nature of the copper vein both on the dump and in situ.
