Griffener Höhle (Griffener Tropfsteinhöhle), Griffen, Völkermarkt, Kärnten, Österreich
The Griffener Tropfsteinhöhle ("Griffener stalactite cave" (Slovenian: Grebinjska jama)) is located below the castle hill of Griffen in Carinthia, Austria.
It served as a shelter for people more than 20,000 years ago, but then fell into oblivion for a long time. The discovery of two hearths, bones of cave bears, giant deer and woolly rhinoceroses as well as stone tools inside the cave proved that the market town of Griffen is one of the oldest settlement areas in Carinthia. Only in the last months of World War II was the cave rediscovered in search of suitable air raid shelters. The stalactite cave was opened to visitors in 1956 and declared a natural monument in 1957.
The entrance to the cave is directly opposite the parish church. It is open from May 1st to October 31st. The length of the cave is 485 m, making it significantly smaller than the Obir stalactite cave south-east of Klagenfurt. Due to its colorful stalactite formations, the Griffen Cave is considered the "most colorful stalactite cave in Austria". During the guided tours through the show cave, which last approx. 40 minutes, the last part explains to the visitor the formation of the earth up to the recent past by means of a multimedia journey through time. The cave has a temperature of 8 °C regardless of the season.
