Local collectors have obtained a number of specimens from along the coastline here. It is the site of a few cottages (called cribs in New Zealand), a couple of kilometres west of Pahia. The sources are quite old, and it is uncertain how much material remains, although the beach sands get replenished after storms.
They state deep salmon pink feldspar crystals are plentiful in diorite vugs, with a schorl centre, or grassy-green coloured chlorite. Also found amongst large boulders are the feldspar crystals, and sometimes green epidote fans, rare small schorl crystals. In the early days of collecting (probably early 1970's), crystals were found up to 54 mms by 23 mms. Three feldspar dykes are just east of the cottages at Peni Bay.
Just west of Cosy Nook, are three dykes containing pyrite. Deep red rusty patches are seen at the surface, but further down in fresh material are brassy pyrite cubes to 3 cms, and occasional pyritohedrons to 4 cms. There are also feldspathic dykes here with chlorite, and allanite is suggested also.
Beyond this to the west by 200 metres in the next bay is a feldspathic dyke with chromite crystals, the material having stained the feldspar green. Also traversing this dyke is a seam of magnetite, with small magnetite octahedrons, schorl, trace copper, and pink orthoclase crystals.
Along the coastline at times is black magnetite sands with gold, and red spessartine garnet sands.
