Blue Hill Village
Blue Hill is a small town located on Blue Hill Bay on the Gulf of Maine. A prominent geographic feature is a small hill, called Blue Hill, that overlooks the town and the bay. The area is a small mining district that was active in 1876 into the mid-1880s, with a few small periods of revival in the latter 1910s and in the 1960s. The principal ores contained copper and manganese, but only a few ventures were economically successful.
The mineralogy of the Douglass Mine is poorly known as it was never subject to stringent scientific analysis, unlike the nearby Black Hawk Mine. Most of the mineral reports come from old literature or from discoveries on mineral specimens which were selected for their unusual associations. Rock-forming minerals such as micas and feldspars remain unreported.
The "mines" near the Douglass Mine may or may not have seen serious mines. In the 1990s, the loose surface rocks and small rock piles did not offer much evidence of activity and ore minerals were also sparse.
