Los cobalt mines are located 2,1 km NNV of Los church and occur in an area over a length of appr. 200m striking NV-SE. Copper ore was mined from 1699 in the so called Gamla (Old) Mine (=Adolfsgruvan). In 1736 the mineralized area was stripped of overburden which led to the discovery of rich cobalt ore. During the first years the ore was exported directly- but in -45 the Sophiendahl paint factory started its production.
The ore occurred in thin (1-30cm) thick veins and lenses- but also as impregnations and ore shots.
The element nickel was discovered 1751 in ore (probably gersdorffite) from the copper-cobalt mines of Los.
The following mines are registered:
Jonas (or Norra) , Rymningen, Gustafs, Adolfs, Nya Lovisa (Nya=New).
The following test pits (=forsök in Swedish) are registered:
Tryggens, Vestra, Hya, Hans Pers, Bergens.
During 1990s the mines were dewatered and became a tourist attraction.
Spelling varities : Tegengren (1924): Loos; Wik et al (2009): Los
