The George & Charlotte Mine is close to Morwellham Quay and is the classic location for the finest childrenite found in the UK. The William & Mary Mine lies on the eastern extension of the lode worked in George & Charlotte, and which together formed Devon & Cornwall United Mines. About 100 fathoms (ca. 183 m) of untried ground separates the mines. The output from 1852-1869 was 16,595 tons of copper ore and 110 tons of pyrite.
Morwellham Quay lies on the River Tamar, 35 km inland from Plymouth. It was the "richest Copper Port in Queen Victoria's Empire". Vessels of up to 300 tons reached the port daily in the latter half of the 19th century, to take ore from the nearby Devon Great Consols Mine and others.
Morwellham Quay is now a heritage centre. A tramway runs 460 metres into the adit of George and Charlotte to its underground waterwheel.
