Serpentinite outcrops above the hamlets of Quadradin (1765 m), also known as Quadrada inferiore or Quadrada da fuora, and Quadrada (1861 m), also known as Quadrada da daint.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were six active asbestos mines above the two hamlets. In one of the abandoned underground workings above the hamlet of Quadrada the first finding in Switzerland of nesquehonite was reported (Parker et al., 1939).


Serpentinite cropping out above Quadradin (Quadrada inferiore or Quadrada da fuora) is frequently crossed by metamorphic veins filled with white fibrous chrysotile (fibrous aggregates up to 30 cm in length have been found). Associated minerals are andradite crystals, varying in colour from brown, to yellow-brown, yellow-green, and green (demantoid variety), granular magnetite, and acicular diopside. Diopside forms also small colourless to white individual crystals or radianting aggregates varaying in colour from whitish to greenish, pinkish, and violet. Tabular crystals of titanite, clinochlore, and ilmenite sporadically occur. Calcite and aragonite are also found.


In his study on the metallic minerals included in serpentinite from the Selva-Quadrada area, De Quervain (1963) used 20 polished sections from the chrysotile-bearing sepentinite outcrop above Quadradin (Quadrada inferiore or Quadrada da fuora) and 18 polished sections from the mining area above Quadrada (Quadrada da daint).
