Some gossan-like βcopper-clayβ deposits (eg. Lyell Blocks, King Lyell) lie adjacent to the Mt Lyell sulphide deposits and are locally very copper rich but have only constituted a small part of the production to date. They contain native copper, cuprite, chalcocite, digenite, bornite, covellite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, siderite-rhodochrosite and goethite in illite-kaolinite clays derived from altered limestones. The copper and cuprite are hosted by goethite nodules in clay.
