The earliest notes about this copper mine are from the year 1644, when a burgher from Stockholm, Olof Grape got the Kings license. Grape lacked the financial means, so in 1655 the license was transferred to the Dutch brothers Momma. Although the official books lack any production figures for the years 1644-1697, Tegengren mentions 90-120 tonnes of copper per annum during the 1660s. Figures for the years 1698 until 1785 give a total of 45 tonnes.

A number of mines and test-pits have been done: Storgruvan, Storrymningen, Stockentrömsgruvan and Venika Petitsgruvan. In the south are: St Jakob & Södergruvan- further west are Väster- & Jöns Olsgruvorna- to name a few. Storgruvan is the deepest (93 m).

The copper ores are intimately associated with scapolite-rich rocks which surround a big iron deposit to the North, South, and West. The iron-ore is about 1300 m long, about 30 m wide with a strike very close to N-S, known to a depth of ~350 m. The Northern part is dominated by magnetite whereas the Southern one by hematite.

Located immediately next (~1km) to the Leveäniemi mine, 3 km west of Svappavaara.

The (main) waterholes for Kiruna people are called "Momma's".
