EducationRogers, Cedric (1972) Finding Britain's Gems - cartoonist ?

21st Mar 2024 10:49 UTCHerwig Pelckmans

This past weekend I acquired a copy of this booklet.

In it are some cartoons, done by someone who signed them with either HWT or HNT.
Does anyone know who was this cartoonist?

Side-question: this booklet is no longer copy-righted?

How about posting a sample cartoon with initials. I note other publications by Rodgers have similar cartoons that may be by the same artist; maybe attribution to artist is given there.

Dear Herwig,

I believe that in most countries the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works can be applied; in Europe the expiry of the right is set at 70 years from the death of the author of the work, in the United States, where the term begins starting not from the death of the author but from the publication of the work, the expiration occurs after 95 years.

Therefore for a work published in 1972 the copyright is still in force.

Max and John,
Thanks for your replies.
Since the copyright has not expired yet, I'll refrain from posting a cartoon.
I was hoping the artist would have been known by some of the UK members, since it's a publication about British minerals ...

I saw no credit given to the contributing cartoonist HWT, but assume the cover illustrator and another illustration for "Minerals of the Midlands" on page 13, are by Cedric Rogers himself (?)

The same cartoonist regularly contributed to 'Gems' magazine in the 1970.  is it HAT rather than HWT?

Grenville Cedric Henry Rogers was an American born of English parents and was a very talented cartoonist, artist and illustrator. Both his parents were book illustrators and he inherited the skill. He was a cartoonist for Punch magazine and his paintings of Cornish mine scenes appear on auction sites at times. He seemed to keep his artistic talents under his full name of Grenville Cedric Henry Rogers and his writings just as Cedric Rogers. He lived in Camborne, Cornwall and died  26th Nov 2005. I would have assumed that he illustrated his own publications possibly with an alternative identifying mark for his cartoons.
